The Tide Was High

20 September 2011

In recognition of BC Rivers Day on September 25, the BEAT (Brentwood Environmental Action Team) planned a shoreline cleanup, but as the tide was too high (time and tide wait for no man) we conducted a cleanup of Wheelbarrow Creek and the local community. Thirteen students, in grades 9 through 12, donned bright orange gloves and collected garbage and recyclables.

Though it was unclear to us why people choose to litter, it was clear that people do litter anything and everything. We discovered a wide array of garbage, from a couple of empty cans of spray paint to more than a hundred pieces of garbage from fast food restaurants.

Post-cleaning, we gathered at the fire pit, under the clear blue sky, with a feast of hot dogs, smores, and oreos to celebrate our achievement of eliminating litter in our community. Thanks to all the students and Mrs. Richardson who came out and helped clean up our local environment!

Waste Reduction Week in BC is from October 17 to 25. Brentwood is participating in a RECYCLE YOUR CELL contest so drop your used cell phone off at the Bursary. Please do your part to help lower your ecological footprint.
