Sonia Speaks Up

As classes were winding down before final assessments, the AP Comparative Government & Politics class had a rich assortment of guest speakers, the most recent of which was Ms Sonia Furstenau, member of BC’s Legislative Assembly for the Cowichan Valley, and the Leader of the BC Green Party.

Ms Furtsenau approached this presentation with our class more like a discussion than a lecture, asking us questions about what we thought about the local government, trends in democracy, and political participation. A lot of this related to what we are learning in our AP course.

It was amazing to see someone so passionate about having open discussions with their constituents, especially the future political generation - us teenagers. Sonia also had a lot of great insight into what it means to be a woman in politics, and what is being done to address the climate crisis.

One of the best parts about Brentwood is its connection to the community, and a perfect example of this is the ability to have guest speakers like MLA Sonia Furstenau.

I would like to thank Mrs Hall for organizing this discussion and Sonia for making time in her busy schedule to come down and chat with our class.
