Shell Christening

4 May 2011
Deirdre H
On the bright afternoon of Saturday, April 30th, a glorious ceremony and celebration took place. Not only was it the second day of the 41st annual Brentwood Regatta, but three new BCRC shells were also christened.

With the help of generous donors, the school has three new shells: a quad, a pair and an eight. Complete with a bottle of champagne, a crew of alumni, parents and current students had the honors of baptizing the boats.

The midweight quad was named after Jamie Faris ‘00, a Brentwood alumnus, two time CSSRA gold medalist, Princeton graduate, winner of a gold and silver medal at the U23 world championships, and a spare for the 2008 Canadian Olympic rowing team. Jamie’s grandparents, who were able to attend the ceremony, christened the boat.

The men’s pair, appropriately named after Brentwood alumnus, Princeton grad, three time Olympian, and current Brentwood rowing coach, Harold Backer ‘80, was christened by Mr. Backer himself. Mr. Backer’s athletes, who captured three medals over the weekend, were in attendance.

The last boat to be named was a new men’s eight, named after the Junior Crews of 2009.  Under the expert coaching of Mr. Backer’s and Mr. Vermegen, the junior boys’ crews of 2009 experienced fabulous victories, particularly at the high school national championships in St Catharine’s.  The boys took home four gold medals: heavy and lightweight eights and fours, as well as a silver in the double. This vast collection of medals, combined with the senior men’s results, allowed Brentwood to win the men’s total points championship that spring.

All three shells will contribute greatly to the Brentwood boathouse, and will hopefully be often seen crossing finish lines in first place. Many great seasons of rowing are to be expected.
