Shawnigan Draws Even: The Island Championships

14 May 2013
Mr. Steve Cowie, Coach
Saturday was another hard fought battle with Shawnigan, our fourth tilt this season. After losing 17-10 to us on Tuesday in the final league game, Shawnigan came at us with everything they had in the first twenty minutes and went out to a well-deserved 10-0 lead. That woke up our girls and we got some momentum going which led to a try by Ciel A-B, which left us behind 10-5 at the break. Play surged back and forth in the second half but Shawnigan pressure led to a controversial try which put them up 17-5. Brentwood stormed back to score two tries of our own, by Lauren A and Nambi M. The second try, a penalty try on a high tackle, was converted by Lauren and the game was tied at the end of regulation. Both teams had great chances to score in the first overtime, but it wasn't until the dying minutes of the second overtime that Shawnigan put the game away after sustained pressure left several Brentwood players down with injuries. In evening our season series at two games each, Shawnigan snatched away the Island title and earned the number two seed at the BCs. Brentwood is seeded fourth. With any luck we will meet again in the provincial AA final. Coaches, spectator and players alike all felt that the game was an exciting, physical battle with great performances by both teams, the kind of tough game that will prepare the teams well for the challenge of the BC tournament.
