Pain, Rain, and Gain: Brentwood Faces The Frostbite Regatta
Last weekend, the Brentwood rowers faced the elements with grit, overcoming rain, enduring pain, and achieving gains as they proudly represented Brentwood in two contrasting regattas: The Head of the Lake and The Frostbite Regatta.
The Frostbite Regatta posed a challenging 1000m sprint, while The Head of the Lake Regatta unfolded as an incredible, strategic 4800m head odyssey. In both competitions, the men and women of Brentwood rowing showcased not only their physical capability but also their strategic finesse, bringing pride to the Brentwood name with each and every powerful stroke taken.
The Women's U19 8+ confronted torrential rain just before their 1000m sprint race. Nevertheless, coxswain Annika M, Alex ‘25 reinforced the ethos of "Without grit, you cannot find joy" mere moments before their race, serving as a powerful reminder of The Brentwood Standard for the women. Despite the challenge, the team secured a remarkable second-place finish with a time of 3:44. This race posed a unique difficulty for the women, accustomed to long-distance training throughout the year. Nonetheless, they embraced an exceptional mindset, contributing to their impressive performance.
The Brentwood Women also participated in the Varsity 4+, competing at Frostbite with the same resilient ideology as the eight. This approach propelled them to a first-place finish, completing the race in an impressive time of 4:04.
From the shores, numerous Brentwood supporters and teammates gathered to cheer on the women. Rowan V, Hope ‘25 remarked that the women's eight appeared “effortless”, even in the chilly weather.
The Brentwood rowers also had the opportunity to connect with The Green Lake Crew, as they were graciously hosted by the athletes' families. Peter D, Privett ‘25 conveyed that staying with the families was a fantastic experience: "It was great to spend time with new people and learn about them and their clubs."
Despite the cold and wet weather, it was a fantastic opportunity, and every Brentwood rower is grateful for the chance to race one last time before winter training begins. Thanks to Mr Calder, Ms Manton, & Mr Wismer for giving up their time to provide us this great opportunity.
