Ng on Science
This past Wednesday UBC professor Dr. David Ng gave talks to our students in the lecture theatre. Dr. Ng supervises the Michael Smith Molecular Biology Lab and his talk to senior biology students reflected his interest in genomics, the study of DNA and gene sequencing.
Being able to identify genes for all kinds of traits, positive and negative, is becoming an increasingly important medical and ethical issue as gene sequencing becomes ever more rapid and affordable.
Dr. Ng's other passion is science literacy and he spoke to the Grade 9 class about the importance of viewing data and events from a scientific viewpoint. Examples were drawn from the IPCC report on climate change as well as anecdotal reports of the existence of unicorns! It was a pleasure to have Dr. Ng with us for the day and to establish what we hope might become an ongoing relationship with his department at UBC.
