Indoor Erging: Meeting the Monster

24 February 2013

Indoor rowing, otherwise known as erging, consists of an ergometer, a poor soul, and gratuitous amounts of pain. February 2nd and 3rd, two indoor rowing competitions took place, the 2nd Annual Ergfest at Brentwood and the 28th Annual Monster Erg National Indoor Rowing Championships hosted by the University of Victoria.

At an erg competition, the battle is less with other rowers and more between the rowers and their ergs. For any rower, an erg score is important in terms of representing their strength and competitiveness. Therefore, at any competition there is an internal battle to pull a new personal best (PB). Pulling a PB can help to get you into a university, into a better crew, and earn you respect within the club.

On Saturday afternoon, hosted in Brentwood’s new erg room in the Old Academic Block, the 2nd Annual Erg Fest, a competition between Shawnigan Lake School and Brentwood, hummed along. Shawnigan bused over from their school and were welcomed into events ranging from 1500 M to 2000 M in all categories including novice, lightweight and open.

During an erg race, the standings of each rower are projected onto a wall at the front of the room to show everyone how fast each rower is pulling; eight ergs were set up for racing. At 1:30 the racing started and the room was crowded with coaches giving their athletes pep talks. Many spectators had come down to see the action and all the rowers were warming up for their up-coming races with personal bests in mind.

Gold Medals were won by:
Luke B: Jr. A Boys
Jon H: Jr. A Lightweight Boys
Sloan S: Novice Boys
Tara C: Jr. A Girls
Lindsay M: Jr. A Lightweight Girls
Kirsten M: Novice Girls
Lucy S: Jr. A Lightweight Novice Girls
Mollie M-G: Jr. B Girls
Sarina S: Jr. B Lightweight Girls
Anton S: Jr. B Boys
Scott W: Jr. B Lightweight Boys

At Sunday’s Monster Erg, Rielly M finished 2nd in the amusingly named 500 M Coxswain’s Crawl, Nick R brought home bronze in the highly anticipated and competitive U 19 men’s category and, last but not the least, Tom G placed first in the 72kg U19 men’s division.

Brentwood had a successful weekend of erging and pain. Our athletes were able to find more energy than they ever thought they had. Events such as Monster Erg and the Ergfest help to build the competitive nature of Brentwood’s rowing team.

See you at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta March 2nd and 3rd!
