Hockey's Back!

20 January 2013

With the NHL lockout just ending after an agonizing 113 days, hockey will once again become a welcome sight on the television, bringing houses together to cheer and banter as they watch their favourite team battle to the top or fall to the bottom. This short professional season also garners excitement for our very own hockey right here in Mill Bay.

Brentwood Hockey is not known for producing Olympians (we leave that to the rowers) - but in a few years that might change. This fun sport has bumped up expectations for the ’12 - ’13 season.

Beginning in September, ice hockey began its very first “training term” in the programme’s history. Although the turnout was relatively small (10 skaters) these players were glad to have an opportunity to skate and handle the puck before playing second term games. Focusing on shooting and goalie skills, everyone learned something in this experimental training period.

As first term wound down, the team skated into its first head-to-head match against a familiar rival - Shawnigan Lake School. Matt F and Logan B shared goaltender duties while Joel C and Jarl W each scored one and Cristian J added a hat-trick in a riveting 5-3 win. The next challenge presented itself with Chemainus Secondary School, and although they fought hard, Brentwood headed home with a 4-4 tie before the winter break. Cristian J, Joel C, Jarl W, and Kai L each scored a goal.

As school started up again, so did the rain and the team was glad to be inside the arena as a heavy downpour pummelled Brentwood’s fields, closing them the first Tuesday back. The two practices before meeting Cowichan High School in Duncan weren’t enough to secure a win, and Brentwood headed home with a 3-1 loss, with the single goal being scored by Jarl W.

The team, however, has high hopes for the Shawnigan-Brentwood Showcase game this coming Saturday night. For the past four years, Brentwood has triumphed in this game, which is a phenomenal spectacle for the school. Bleachers become distinct nations.

The outcome of the game will be up to the teams to decide, but I look forward to cheering Brentwood on in red and black as they put their best skate forward.
