Girls Rugby Springs Into Action

7 April 2012
After nearly three weeks of inactivity, the girls had to take on the always rough and ready Cowichan SS team which had been training over the holidays and had thirty girls battling for positions. We had only sixteen available as a result of injuries in the McGeachy Tournament (Nicole S and Hanna V) and a fall down stairs (Nambi M).
Cowichan knocked the rust off us to the tune of 17-5, but there were positive signs in the loss. Shannyn O scored a brilliant try out wide after a great kick by Meghan G and some good passing in the backs. For most of the game we were defending and there were great displays of tackling by everyone, but most notably Meghan G, Carolina M, Katrina F, Angela W and Laura A. Some of our new players distinguished themselves and showed that they are learning the game quickly. Ashley C, Kathleen C, Krista B and Mack S all showed up well against much more experienced opposition. Our scrums were solid, anchored by Alia V and our lineouts were excellent, with Georgia W winning good ball for the backs to run.
We were in the game until injuries to Shannyn O, Laura A and Angie W depleted our backline and Cowichan wore us down to score two tries at the end. The team battled through adversity and showed great character in tough circumstances. Team captain, Emma F summed it up by saying, "I can't wait to play them again; we can beat these guys." Some work on rucking, low tackling and ball retention in contact along with key players returning from injury should close the gap between us and some of the bigger AAA schools like Cowichan.
Our next game is against Shawnigan on April 12.
