Eco-Challenge 2020

Last weekend Brentwood participated in the first interhouse event of the year. With tensions high and spirits higher, teams from each cohort raced through a plethora of difficult challenges, competing for first place in order to win the most points for their houses. Adding to the excitement, many came out in the windy weather to support their peers in this nerve-wracking relay race.

Events kicked off with the paddleboard obstacle course, in which competitors paddled around buoys and through hoops in rough waters. Once a paddleboarder completed their course, the kayakers began an exhilarating race around distant buoys and back, where they concluded their segment with a wet exit. As soon as one male and female kayaker from the same cohort finished, they sent off their male runner, who went on to tag the next person on their team, commencing the portage section.

In a flurry of events, the voyageur would then run their team’s canoe all the way down to the waterfront. It is then that the fifth segment would begin, with two people, one from each house in their cohort, canoeing out to sea and back. Once finished, a female runner with a fire-starting kit ran to their fire-building team. In this final portion of the affair a three-person team built a fire hot enough to boil over the water within the billy tin. At the rolling boil, they ran as fast as possible to ring the finish bell.

House standings at the end of the event were as follows: First: Ellis/Mack; Second: Privett/Hope; Third: Whittall/Alex & Fourth: Rogers/Allard.

Nick P, Co-Interhouse Captain, Rogers ‘21, said “It wasn’t the start we (Rogers/Allard) were wishing for, but we will have a lot of other opportunities to show our strengths this coming year!” As Allard’s Co-Interhouse Captain (along with Sasha I) I can attest to this. Though it may not have been the best possible start to the Interhouse competition, there are many chances for the standings to change.

Even in taking the loss, Dylan K, Rogers ‘21 detailed, “It was such a blast. It was really nice to get back that old interhouse spirit that everyone missed so much at the end of last year. Our Interhouse Captains did an incredible job of organizing it and keeping up with Brentwood’s mitigation strategies as well!” Interhouse events are such a great bonding experience for everyone, and they can be a well-deserved escape from the daily pressures of school.

The key organizer whom we couldn’t have done without, Mr Norman said, “It is always encouraging to see how much enthusiasm our students have for the outdoor activities which are featured in this event. There were some great displays of skill, and some moments of humility when students struggled to complete tasks their peers had dialed in. A huge thanks to Mrs. McLean and the Interhouse Captains, as well as Mr Griffiths, Ms Olszewski, Ms Wolinski, Ms Davis, Ms Bell Etkin, Ms Nasmith, Mr Edwards, and all the other staff who stepped forward to help with various parts of the event!”

I think we can all agree that we are looking forward to the next interhouse event as well: cross-country this Saturday afternoon!

Can’t wait to see you all there supporting your peers!
