Cross Country Running
This cross-country season began with a calm day of apple picking in the sun to support the BEAT team’s harvest initiative but quickly ramped up in intensity to prepare for the annual Cowichan Valley Running Series. Our training consisted of brutal ab workouts, lengthy local runs and draining speed drills; however, nothing could have prepared us for the Biblical downpour at the Bright Angel race, or the never-ending ascent at our home event on Cobble Hill Mountain.
Despite these challenges, Brentwood prevailed and performed exceedingly well in the series; 11 of our runners placed in the top eight of their respective categories at one of these races (and received a ribbon), in addition to Layla Reynolds and Nirav Nayak both earning first place finishes. Participation in these races allowed our entire team to compete at Islands, which, ironically, was held in Powell River instead of on the Island. After a four-hour commute and a night in a beautiful oceanside hotel, Brentwood qualified Cole Curtis Chesters, Nita Qiu, Nirav Nayak, Nika Lam and Layla Reynolds for provincials in Vancouver. All of these runners demonstrated an exceptional effort during provincials, tackling the delightfully muddy conditions at Jericho Beach with true Brentwood grit.
This term was characterized by stunning destination runs, valuable team bonding and great competitive success. Every member of our group improved their speed and endurance while also enjoying the program's unique culture and traditions. With immense gratitude, we thank our returning coaches Mr. Skardal and Mrs. Reynolds, as well as Mrs. Gage, a new addition to the program, for their outstanding leadership and dedication.
