Breaking Down the Language: What AP English Lang & Comp is All About
From rhetorical analysis to synthesis and argument essays, AP English Language and Composition pushes students to think critically and write with purpose. Far beyond grammar drills or book reports, the course centers on nonfiction texts, challenging students to evaluate evidence, construct persuasive arguments, and develop a strong, confident voice. With each assignment, students sharpen their ability to analyze language, respond to complex prompts, and communicate effectively - skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
Taught by Mr Collis Handford, the course demands what he calls “a unique combination of tenacity and talent.” “Often students begin the course with more of one than the other,” he explains, “but by the end, they’ve developed both”. Like Atticus Finch guiding Scout through Maycomb, Mr Collis Handford helps us navigate the complexities of language and life with clarity, purpose, and compassion.
So far, students have tackled two of the course’s three major essays: synthesis and rhetorical analysis. They’ve recently begun the argument essay, applying their growing understanding of language and structure to build compelling, well-supported arguments. Alongside essay writing, students have practiced multiple-choice strategies and even explored public speaking through the Melhuish competition.
But what truly sets the course apart is the energy Mr Collis Handford brings each day - whether through sharp-witted jokes, memorized lectures, or the positivity that fills the room.
“AP English is my favourite course not just because of how much I’ve learned, but because Mr Collis Handford genuinely loves watching his students grow. I’ve developed not only as a writer but as a person,” says Ryer B, Whittall ’26. For Ryer, the course has been deeply rewarding - both academically and personally.
Zane F, Privett ’26, adds, “Having Mr Collis Handford as a teacher makes the course even better. I’ve become a stronger speaker, reader, and writer - and I’ve improved faster than I imagined.” For Zane, his fast-paced growth has made the experience especially exciting.
Looking ahead, students will continue refining their essays, strengthening their multiple-choice skills, and preparing for the AP exam in May. The effort they’ve put in will be evident - and rewarding.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr Collis Handford. Your guidance as a teacher, Houseparent, and friend has meant so much to me. I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned from you since arriving at Brentwood and look forward to finishing the year strongly under your continued guidance, becoming a better English student and person day by day.
