Bonding Over Bowling
Last Saturday night, Hope House and Privett House escaped the “Brentwood Bubble” for a couple of hours and went midnight bowling. On the bus ride there, I could feel the excitement and energy building. There were shouts, laughter and bright smiles everywhere - not a single one of us could contain our thrill at going on this adventure.
We arrived at the bowling alley at around 10:30pm and quickly sorted ourselves into groups. Each team was a colourful fusion of Hope girls and Privett boys; it was a brilliant opportunity for all of us to get to know each other better and to forge new friendships. A night that began with clumsy conversation and gutter balls ended with natural camaraderie and - on occasion - strikes!
The sounds of crashing bowling balls and calls of encouragement harmonized with the music playing in the background. In our borrowed bowling shoes, we danced to “Gangnam style” and attempted to moon walk on the smooth wooden floors. This was the most beautiful aspect of the evening - we were all so comfortable to simply be ourselves that we could all unmask.
The evening was a huge success. Looking around that bowling alley, filled to the brim with giddy Brentwood students, I couldn’t help but smile. I watched seniors and juniors mingle, glowing white under the black lights, and felt that the glow was a reflection of the warmth brewing within us. I am sure that I speak for all of us when I say that a great first outing together like that gave us confidence that our two houses would be able to form a strong bond this year.
Thank you to Mr. Neufeld and Ms. Hedquist and the other house staff for taking us on this magnificent outing. And thank you to the boys of Privett House for helping make it such a fun night!
