AIRBAND!!
The most notable day of October, 2023 (according to Brentwood students), occurred on Saturday the 28th.
You may find yourself asking: Why Saturday, October 28th, 2023?
AIRBAND BABY! That’s why.
Leading up to Airband, students spend a month creating a mashup of songs - and choreography to match. Practices are held frequently throughout the month to teach the choreo and allow for ideas to come together. Interhouse Captains are in frequent communications with their houses and other students step up as leaders to create or help with choreography and music.
The memories created through practices are everlasting. In the moment, we may complain about walking to practice while our mountains of work lie waiting for us back at our desks. In the end, we all show up; we come together in our houses or sibling houses to dance, collaborate, argue, laugh, and bond.
Nurse Decker, one of the recurring judges again this year, mentions she loves seeing the creativity, joy, and effort mustered together on stage. There are four categories that each airband performance is judged on: lip syncing (out of 5 points), choreography (out of 10 points), props/originality/costume (out of 10 points), and overall presentation (out of 15 points).
As a student who has participated in all three airbands that I have been here for, I can easily say that it is the most enjoyed interhouse event across the student community. The energy and passion that is put into planning, preparing, and performing is unmatched to any other event. Every person who contributes helps make it a more complete event.
Two minutes before you go on is when big smiles and nervous laughter fill the air. We lift each other up, calm each other's nerves, and encourage everyone to do their best and appreciate the fleeting moment.
“It was so cool to come up with the choreo in my room and then teach it to the Mermaids and see them nail it!” added Taylor S, Allard ‘24, one of the Allard seniors choreographers. “We understood one another really well and were able to communicate our ideas super easily” added Mimi D, Allard ‘24, the other Allard senior choreographer. Their strong communication, dedication, and teamwork led to the inevitable success of Allard/Rogers.
In first place was Allard/Rogers, second Hope/Privett, third Alex/Whittall, and fourth Mackenzie/Ellis.
The thought, effort, and structure of Airband is incredible and could not have been done without the amazing efforts from everyone on campus: the lighting crew, performers, judges, BFAs, audience, Grad Council, and of course, Ms Ramsay!
