A Place To Call Home
Brentwood has countless support resources; from peer tutoring, tutorial, and math help centre, one does not have to sweat to find assistance. There is always someone, somewhere where students can find support for whatever fits their needs. For students with academic challenges or learning exceptionalities, the Learning Centre quickly becomes a familiar place, like home, and acts as a support element built into one's schedule.
The Learning Centre, or LC for short, is a support block that falls into a student’s schedule like any other class. LC is a block when we can access assistance with what we currently find most challenging or get a headstart on homework in order to decrease the workload for prep. This block is led by either Mrs Pettit or Mrs Coy along with RFAs and other Brentwood faculty switching between blocks to provide maximum support for the students in each block.
The LC staff are a remarkable team who truly care about each individual student. The LC centre provides a “ supportive and positive atmosphere” observed Abby S, Mack ‘21. Before I came to Brentwood, I didn't think a place existed full of such genuine care and support. LC truly feels like home once you accept the fact that the staff only want what is best for each student even though, sometimes, it means doing homework we don’t want to do. I asked a student to describe the LC in one sentence and this was what Kealan M, Privett ‘20 had to say: “The LC is a positive place to develop new learning strategies and complete work with the support of others.” LC is also more than just academic support. If anyone is ever having a bad day, Mrs Coy or Mrs Pettit are always open to having a chat.
If it wasn't for the Learning Centre I would not be in Grade 12 passing all my classes and planning to go to university to study business. I cannot thank the LC team enough! A wise woman, Mrs. Coy, once told me “A teacher never gets to lie under the shade of a tree they plant.” This metaphor is a good way to express the type of work that is done in the Learning Centre.
