As the 2023/2024 school year ended, Ellis House bid an emotional farewell to long-time Assistant Houseparent, Mr Wes Barrett. His departure for his new role as Whittall Houseparent left many feeling uncertain about the future. However, excitement quickly replaced concern when the new Assistant Houseparent was announced, marking the start of a promising new chapter.

Meet Mr Toby Collis Handford. Commonly called TCH, Toby, an alumnus of Brentwood’s Class of 2013 and former Privett House member, now joins Ellis Houseparent Mr Wismer. Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Toby’s connection to Brentwood runs deep. His father, Mr Paul Collis, is Head of the English Department, and his sister, Holly, is also a Brentwood graduate.

Since returning to Brentwood in 2021 as an English teacher, he has become a well-known figure, also coaching soccer and leading the flag football program.

TCH’s academic journey is equally impressive. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia, receiving the Chancellor’s Scholarship and the Kelly Curtis Memorial Scholarship in English. Before Brentwood, he taught at UBCO, West Vancouver Secondary School, and Academic Camps Canada, yet, it’s his humble and caring nature that truly sets him apart.

“He’s one of the kindest and most approachable people I’ve ever met,” shared Federico E, Ellis ‘28. “He makes life in the house enjoyable for everyone. Seeing him happy makes me happy too.” Federico’s words reflect the warm, supportive environment Mr TCH fosters in Ellis.

Milan L, Ellis ‘26, emphasized TCH’s personal connection with students: “Mr Collis Handford feels more like a big brother than a Houseparent. My respect and appreciation for him will always be there. He doesn’t just teach; he understands us as individuals, and his positive attitude is contagious.” From late-night study sessions to early-morning flag football practices, TCH’s dedication leaves a lasting impression on his students.

Ellis Houseparent Mr Wismer echoed these sentiments: “Mr Collis Handford is a great Houseparent because of his incredible energy and enthusiasm. He loves interacting with students day and night and understands what it means to be in their shoes, having been a Brentwood student himself. He always seems to have unlimited time to listen, and I’m sure all the boys appreciate him.”

A heartfelt thank you goes to Mr Collis Handford. From the first day we arrived at Brentwood, he welcomed us with open arms, offering endless support and care. He goes beyond the classroom to positively impact our lives - whether it’s late-night life conversations or early Sunday mornings on the flag football field. Faculty like him make Brentwood special - teachers are mentors and like family, not just educators.

As the year continues, the Ellis House community eagerly anticipates new memories under his guidance, confident that with Mr Collis Handford, the best is yet to come.
