A ‘First Ever’ for Brentwood Athletics
With second term upon us, so is the switch to second-term sports. As per the Brentwood standard, there is always so much happening.
Most of our volleyball teams have finished their seasons, so has field hockey and boys soccer.
The rugby teams – both men and women – are braving the cold in the off-season to sharpen their skills for the competitive season. Second term for rugby at Brentwood is truly a test of Grit and Joy. Practices in the rainy December weather are enough to knock even some of the most dedicated players. Mr Cowie, a long-time Brentwood legend and one of the women's rugby coaches, said that the upcoming spring season is looking “extremely promising”.
Basketball is heating up fast as well, with all six of our men's and women's teams starting their competitive seasons. The Senior Girls team is seeing some brand new faces in the program which, according to one of the starting five, Peyton H, Hope ‘24, is “super exciting” to see. Our three ice hockey programs, have, of course, already started training and playing games including a tournament in the Lower Mainland.
One sport, however, is generating quite a buzz on campus, because, for the first time, climbing is now a competitive sport. This ascent was no easy feat, and we can chalk up this victory to Nirva M, Hope ‘24 and Elias F, Privett ‘24, who, between them, found a handhold and pushed for this recognition. Nirva said that “a lot of planning” went into making this happen. To be a competitive team at Brentwood you have to meet certain criteria, and with the help of the Head Climbing Coach, Ms Laitinen, Elias and Nirva worked to make their passion a reality. The team held tryouts in November and has already participated in one competition. Rest assured that they have a jam-packed season this winter, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the results.
I'd like to give a shout-out to all of the second-term sports coaches: without you this tripartite program would not even exist. Thank you for your commitment and efforts for our athletes.
Inara W, Hope ‘24
