A Dozen Years of Sage Advice

28 December 2012
Mr. Brian Carr, Whittall '80
Twelve years ago our Head Prefect Andjela S and the rest of this year’s grad class were just starting Grade 1. At the same time, Mrs. Debbie Sage joined Rowing BC’s Board of Directors. She served on committees that helped organize referee clinics, coaching conferences, and develop junior rowing in British Columbia.

Four years ago Andjela started in Grade 8, and Mrs. Sage assumed the role as President of Rowing BC; she began representing our province at the national level. Continuing her role with coaching education, the national safety committee, and junior development, Mrs. Sage has played an integral part in rowing in British Columbia, and in Canada.

Often I would go into Mrs. Sage’s office to ask her about something to do with Brentwood rowing – remember, she is also the coordinator of the Brentwood College Rowing Club and Chair of the Brentwood Regatta, the largest high school regatta in North America! I would find her on the phone speaking directly to the president of Rowing Canada or of another province. Mrs. Sage has always been well respected by the rowing community in Canada and she would often be called upon by these very important people for advice on how to do things right.

For all of this time and energy, what was her salary from Rowing BC and Rowing Canada?

Nothing! She has volunteered her time for the past 12 years, the same time it has taken Andjela and her peers to get from Grade 1 to Grade 12!

This selfless act of volunteerism to Rowing BC and Rowing Canada, while at the same time always representing the needs of Brentwood College School, has been exceptional. Mrs. Sage finished her two-term, four year stint as President of Rowing BC in November. On behalf of the Brentwood College Rowing Club and the entire school I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Sage for her energy and selfless dedication to these two organizations.
