Here at Brentwood’s 51st International Rowing Regatta we celebrate 50 years of women making our school Canada’s first boys'  boarding school to welcome girls. This is Brentwood’s 10th Regatta art show. It is titled The Legacy Exhibition and the theme this year is legacy. “Its focus is to represent and celebrate the 50 years of the integration of women and the powerful impacts they have had in the progression of our community” reveals Ms Widenmaier, Head of Brentwood’s Arts Program.

The show exhibits a variety of paintings, drawings, mixed media, film, animated film, clothing design, live music, and sculpture - all done by student artists.

“The majority of these works are done by women, somewhat coincidentally, which is great because when you look at museum exhibitions only about 12% of works are done by women even though 54% of working artists are women in North America. So we’re proud of that and everything our students have produced in general, especially the sheer volume of work on the walls this year. It’s a massive effort and there’s a whole lot of people involved. I’m delighted and I’ll be looking at it for weeks” says Mr John Luna, curator of The Legacy Exhibition.

One of the featured artists, Liv H, Hope ‘23, reveals that her most challenging thing as an artist is to overcome her “fear of censorship and backlash for the nudity featured in my work so I wanted to pronounce the censorship and the repression of women by physically covering some of the images with tape.” She shares, “I don’t need anyone to empower me. I can empower myself”.

A huge thank you to all the artists and curators who helped organize this exhibition and bring the show to life, and to the women who have helped make Brentwood the place it is today. We celebrate your past, present, and the many years ahead.
